A play on words

“I object m’lord,” cried the defender.
“Objection overruled.” The judge frowned.
“But the object in question, the fender,
Was in fact already unsound.”

“I will not excuse this quibble,
Your defence is just an excuse.
Your words are simply drivel,
The court’s time is being misused.

Prompt. Excuse and object used as both a verb and a noun.
