The Right Road

“Are you sure this is the right road?” I checked the map. John checked the road sign.

“No, you need the wrong road.”

John was still looking out the window. “Who said that?”

“Not me. I’m still trying to read the map.”

“Or perhaps you could try the upside down road,” said the mystery voice.

John got out of the car. “Who’s there?”

The road sign twirled then came to a stop.

“Personally I think the backwards road is best.”

“John, get back in the car. I think I found the way. We missed a turn.”

“Wait, honey. I’m trying to find who’s talking.”

“She can’t help. Trust me, you need the road you’ll find over there.”

“Over where?”

“John, we have to go. It’s getting dark.”

“I’m getting directions. We have to go over there.”

“Where?” I leaned out the window to see John running away.

“He’s going over there. To the road.”

“John!” I couldn’t see him. I got out of the car. He had the keys. And the phone.“Where did he go?” I demanded of the phantom voice.

“Where? Here. Over there. Everywhere. Somewhere. Nowhere.”
