Questions

“Can I ask you a question?”

“I guess so... why do you ask?”

“The question? Or the question about asking a question?”

“Huh?”

“Are you asking me why I’m asking you a question, or what the question is, that I want to ask you?”

“Ah...”

“I mean I know I can certainly ask you a question. Asking a question is completely acceptable. But, if you are asking me why I’m asking you the question I want to ask you, well that’s different.”

“Huh?”

Well, it might be personal, or it might be about a subject you don’t want to talk about, or about somebody you don’t want to talk about, or something you don’t even know about!”

“But... I...”

“Oh don’t worry, I wouldn’t press you if it turned out to be a sensitive subject. I have things I don’t want to talk about too, everybody does.”

“Ah, well, never mind... what exactly IS the actual question that you want to ask me?”

“The question... Oh crap! Now I forgot what my question was!”
