We appreciate the value of something only when we are deprived of it.
WE WON’T KNOW BEAUTY WITHOUT UGLINESS: a sonnet

We won’t know beauty without ugliness;
Without thirst there won’t be quenching feeling.
We would not know pleasure without duress;
Without illness we won’t know what’s healing.

The worth of success we know through failure;
The thrill of winning knows he who has lost.
A broken heart yearns for love that is pure.
The spring is welcome after snow and frost.

Don’t argue why god has created pain
Or which is better, flower or a thorn.
Don’t look down on the lowly with disdain.
Did not the crown of thorns Jesus adorn?

The God is bountiful, he has no dearth
But gives us only that what we are worth.
