Signal fire


My eyes shift left, then quickly right
to keep the jokers in my sight.
At ten and two my hands maintain
the center spot of my own lane.

Then siren's wail and flashing red
grab fast my heart and fill with dread
my thoughts, as up ahead a plume
of smoke says someone's met their doom.
