Backstory of Mariska Hart
I have written about my protagonist for three years. I know her well. Instead I am writing about the victim.

"Is Mariska still here?" The principal of the Huggy Babes Nursery looked at her watch. It was 3.45 pm. The children should be collected at 3 pm.

"No one's turned up to get her." The assistant looked out of the window.

"Give it til 4, then we have no choice, we have to contact the police and Social Services."

I had no idea of time; I was only four. I played in the sand pit and wondered what all the fuss was about. A nice lady in a blue cardigan came to talk to me.

"Hello Mariska, I'm Nancy. I'm going to take you to stay with some friends of mine until we can find Mummy and Daddy, okay" She took my hand and led me out to her car.

I didn't know it then, but my parents were dead. It was three days before they found the wreckage.

That was the start of my journey.

The nuns were nice enough, if a little strict. I had to have a bath each night and clean my teeth. In the morning I had to make my bed. They made me eat my greens. They took me to the doctors. I don't know why, I wasn't sick.

Then I met John and Mary, and Bobby. Bobby was my best friend. I loved him. But he was their real kid. He didn't have to move on. "I don't want to go. I love you. Please." I clung to Mary. Then a woman who called herself Grace pulled me away. I waved to Bobby from the back of the car as the tears streamed down my face.

I soon learned what being in care meant. Another home in another town. Being dragged from the people I loved. "I don't make friends." That became my mantra.

I had a plan. Work hard at school. Be good at home. Learn to look after myself. Then University. I wanted to be a lawyer, to defend the kids no one cares about.
