Inspired by Jeremiah 20:9
Everyone craves the peace of purpose—
to be part of something important—
not a call to be cut off young,
to journey captive on a ship doomed
for sinking and go down with the crew.

Perhaps I’ll be saved like Jonah,
swallowed whole and spit up
on foreign shores where we will meet
to compare scars like old sailors.

If not, then
chart a safe course
to your promised land.
I must stay,

watching for red sky over Jerusalem
while my heart burns within
like a lit fuse.
