A review of the dystopian novel by Jessamine Chan
Frida, a child of immigrants in the US, lives in a world where CPS takes it's job very seriously. The slightest error on the part of a parent (let's be real - this applies more to a mother than a father), and they are considered a threat to the child's well-being. On a bad day, Frida leaves her daughter Harriet, alone in the house to grab a coffee and loses track of time. When she returns after a span of two hours, the authorities see her as an irresponsible and dangerous mother, and she is entered into a legal battle to regain custody of Harriet. Harriet is released to her father, Frida's ex-husband, who left her for a younger woman.
