A poem/song about parenting

When I hold you
Instead of hit you
I heal the part of myself
That still bruises
In my heart
And my soul

When I stay quiet
When I choose a kind word
When doubt screams out
in my head
I am holding
Those who hurt me
Back from
Keeping you down

I am breaking
Generational curses
When I love you
And I’m healthy
And strong
Taking care of me
Is taking care of you
When I’m breaking
Generational curses

I can love them
And do better
With no disrespect
We all do
What we can do
When we can do it
Because we’re breaking
Generational curses

There’s no need
To place a blame
I can heal and reclaim
The power to do better
And make my own change

I am breaking
Generational curses
When I love you
And I’m healthy
And strong
Taking care of me
Is taking care of you
When I’m breaking
Generational curses
