A dark and despairing poem
Some say it was for the sin of pride,
That travesty for which so many have died,
For which we lost the Garden of Eden so fair,
Because where God walked we did not dare.
Maybe it was for carnal love,
We lost our grace from God above,
But there was some sinful tree,
For whose sake we lost eternity,
Gaining knowledge by eating its fruit,
Of good and evil, we went in pursuit.
Whatever it was, it was bad,
Have we been punished enough,
Since we were turned out so rough?
We are filled with drives,
By which our species survives.
Did we do that much damage,
That much harm,
When we ate the apple,
So easily reached by our arm?
