Wrote a poem for an old friend who died young. We never reconciled.
Farewell fair-weather friend
The years we had together
Live safely in my heart
The letters we exchanged
The words we spoke in turn
And all the secret things
We would say

We met so many years ago
We were new to the world
We had our secret meeting place
A tree so warm it nurtured us
We’d meet there every day to talk
About the things that children do

That’s how I think of you
Even though you tortured me
Countless times you bled me out
Knowing fully that I’d never
Do the same to you

I tried so hard to understand
The differences between us
To understand how on one day
You’d be my closest friend
And then on another day
You wouldn't even say my name

How can I miss you like I do
When you betrayed me countless times
How could you act so righteously
Looking with disdain on those
Who dared to have a different mind

How could you play the victim
And the culprit all at once
Why did I give you all my heart
Just to see you tear it up
When you felt it right

They say not to speak ill of the dead
But I’ve not got much nice to say
I miss you and regret you
So hear me one last time;
God bless you and forgive you.
This is my final goodbye.
