So long as night shall follow dreary day
and once pristine hours whose promise we gleeful anticipated in morning's cool light
have now passed besmirched with the weary filth of our humdrum doings
tarnished with deeds both repetitive and sullen
hours not lived in moment's thrill
not passed in rapturous adoration of all that is bestowed upon us
but endured
or ignored
wasted
now as darkness in its mercy
murders the miserable day
sleep's sideshow shows us all the might have beens
the missed opportunities for merriment and joy
for love and loving, brave designs and pleasant pastimes
then as we creep from sleep to wake once more
fleet memories of potential soon forgotten
lie unsatisfied in our breast
