A poem about peace written in the Sestina genre.
That all people would be at peace
Is my most consuming desire and dream
If only you could always see the harmonic colour
Of your gentle soul portrayed so very softly
It is something in which you can naturally excel
An excellence at which I alone do not dare

Oh how rotten of this big world to dare
Rob this sweet maiden of her lasting peace
This old world has its help to excel
Pulling down, rooting up, banishing each perfect dream
The subtle enemy would achieve so softly
Changing rainbow lights to dim dark colour

Precious friends do you see the drabness of colour
Which the world upon you would dare
To place in your mind so deceptively softly
That it would choose to blindly rob your peace
And bring pictures of horror in your nightly dream
Robbing, deceiving, and hurting is where it chooses to excel

Righteousness, love and compassion is where we should excel
With the golden glowing light an encompassing colour
Of the dreams the people would dream
Oh that I could have confidence enough to dare
And ambition sufficient to share with all, that peace
Oh I pray that it come upon everyone; kindly, softly

Do you hear the world soughing softly
Under the mounting, ever-present compulsion to excel
A type of pressure that can never bring true peace
Where are those rose-coloured spectacles that once did colour
Where for children, to climb a tree was the dare
And under that tree the young could safely dream

Can the world awaken from its spiralling dream
To come awake, with a new vision softly
Of this fallen earth do I hope or even dare
That the gentler emotions would begin to excel
To refresh and embolden again the colour
Of this sinful world and bring the golden glory of peace

Still I hope for peace, eternally will I dream
That the world's bitter colour can be softly sweetened
To excel at goodness - take up the challenge! Do you dare?
