The hours go by slowly when you are all alone -

THE NURSING HOME

Living in a nursing home
When there is no other way;
When you can't be alone
And there you must stay -

Not the kind of living
That you had hoped to do -
Your eyesight is weaker;
Your hands are trembling too.

Hours are long and quiet
So much time to sit and think;
You wonder where the kids are
As you ask someone for a drink.

The nurses try their best
To give you comfort and care;
Most of them are very nice
And do more than their share.

It's better not to get close
For they've seen too many die;
If they are too emotional
It will hurt to say "goodbye".

You try to write a letter -
(Can they read between the line?)
You say that you are feeling good
And come visit soon, sometime!

You spend your waking hours
With crayons and a colorbook,
Trying to keep up your spirit
(Well, take another look!)

End of day, you get washed up
And in a nightgown dressed;
You pray that God will take you -
For then you'd be truly blessed.

So, prayers for those that suffer
And prayers for those who care;
Will anyone remember -
When they are no longer there?
