WW2 memory from childhood

Fun, games and freedom
That's what childhood is for,
But in the 1940's
Britain was fighting a war.

My earliest memories of those days
Although I see it through a haze,
Was hearing a noise
Which did suddenly stop….
A Doodlebug was about to drop !

Inside our house
Was built a shelter,
To help protect
From the bombs daily pelter.

Before Gran could take me
To the safest of places,
An explosion sent us sprawling
To the floor, on our faces.

Gran lay across me
Protecting me from above,
In her arms I was wrapped
Held firmly with love.

Debris rained down
Glass in windows shattered,
But we'd escaped with our lives
And that's all that mattered.

I'll never forget what Gran did for me
That terrible day in 1943.
