Written for my son -

THE RACE

A heart is strong, there beats within
The courage and the will to win;
Yet hearts give out and cannot be
Pushed to the limits of eternity.

The race with death cannot be won
When all is said and all is done.
A breaking heart, a heart of gold;
Another life seems about to fold.

We try so hard to win the race,
Keeping up so long the frantic pace;
Trying to do what must be done,
In the end, who has really won?

Fight for life, and carry on -
Who will miss us when we're gone?
Up and at 'em; have to try!
Up in Heaven angels fly -

Looking down, give another chance;
For another race, another dance -
So much spirit in our heart!
Ready now? The race will start...

How much can a human heart endure?
Stakes are high, that's for sure.
We will never know the time or place
We will, each one of us, end the race.
