INNOCENT

The man stared through the bars
Of his barren prison cell,
Watching the men work outside;
Silent tears soon fell.

He could almost feel the noose
Tighten around his neck and he
Was innocent, he really was -
But somehow they didn't see.

They claimed they caught him
Running from the scene;
That what he did was dastardly
And they were feeling mean.

He had his trial and tried to prove
That he had not done the crime;
But several men had come forward
To make sure he'd do some time.

There was no justice in town,
The noose was his to wear;
The judge and jury sentenced him
With a silent stare.

Sad the fate he had to endure,
When in truth he was innocent;
And somewhere in the dark night
A murderer is hell-bent!
