One of those bubble gum mantras
We chose a day; we closed our eyes
When we were young long ago
On childhood of wonder and surprise
Replaced by the gloom adult shadow
Within each of us is strength
Within each of us a flaw
But we cannot measure with the same length
Or whether we are rich or poor
Some of us pen the poem
Some of us take the stage
Some of us write the tome
Some of us vent our rage
Some of us build the city
Some of us grow fertile fields
Some of us feel the pity
Which all of our violence yields.
We struggle together, a body one
To live we need each cell to grow
Is the heart or brain, greater than the sum?
Within all of us, one blood must flow
