A thorn remembers Milton!
THE THORN

Woe to me, the hated thorn,
Sent by Him on errand
Of saving a smiling rose
From a villainous hand.

Silently I do my task,
But get naught in return.
Yet I feel sad that it is
Quite thankless sojourn.

I’m faithful to my master.
To loyalty I’m prone.
I am not like the rose which
Smiles one day, then is gone.

Why do you curse me, O man?
Why a thorn you so hate?
Remember, “They also serve,
Who only stand and wait”.

* Written in abcb, 7-6-7-6 format.

* “They also serve who only stand and wait”: The last line of the poem “On His Blindness,” by John Milton.
