Thoughts about thoughts and punctuation.
Why does the English language have so much punctuation? Thoughts, words, and actions rarely pause or stop the way punctuation makes it seem. We think that we control our words, our punctuation, but really, punctuation controls us. I think that those people who ignore punctuation are more free than us readers and writers. But perhaps I am talking nonsense. Without punctuation sentences would be wars. Each word would try to stand out more than the rest. Perhaps punctuation is really something to keep every word in line, working to make sure that each word and letter does its job. If punctuation controls words, doesn't it control us as well? When we read aloud, punctuation controls how fast or slow we speak. It controls when we pause, even when we stop completely. Life is too complicated for our words to be our masters, even if we created those masters.*Bigsmile*
