Poem entered into the Native American Contest
Breathing mist beyond my nose
Looking out at the new fallen snow
Too weak to weep, too hurt to stand
I am the wolf on this forsaken land

Why has my guide taken me here?
Beyond the mountains, an eagle I hear
The sight of all men, the seer of light
The medicine man of this dark night

I am the wolf, half human now
Transforming death into life, but how?
Wounded by a bullet from the white mans hand
I am the wolf, no longer roaming this land

Shape shifter, O spirit of many forms
My guide, please do not misinform
The eagle stands before me with ruffled feathers
Shielding me from this horrid weather

I am the wolf, now bleeding from within
My life as a spirit guide must now begin
As the eagle watches over my deranged soul
I am the wolf, my circle of life now whole.
