A soldier receives a Dear John letter
He stood beside the wishing well
with lucky coin in hand.
Thought of all the wishes
that his aching heart had planned.

But the note that she had written
had changed his life forever.
Standing here beside the well
his love for her did sever.

He missed the scented jasmine
that perfumed her auburn hair,
which now perfumes her letters
and still lingers in the air.

Lonely, salted, crystal tears
meander down his cheek,
with broken heart and sorrow,
for his lost love he does weep.

Red ink now smears the pages
where his tears fell heavily.
Joined by broken promises
he'd had from Beverly.

"I do," was said for all to hear
before he had to leave,
to do his honored duty,
what he truly did believe.

But now he stands on foreign shores
with rifle in his hand.
Staring at the letter that
has fallen on the sand.

He thought himself so lucky
to have the perfect wife.
For her he'd do his duty
create the perfect life.

But she had found another love
in the year he'd been away,
Now he stands here all alone
while she had gone a stray.

Tossing his unlucky coin
into the wishing well.
He makes his final wish for them,
that they both should go to Hell.
