Coffee, a coke, another coffee, another coke, with a smoke, and another, going broke. . .
Caffeine Crying Crazy

Living coffee to caffeine.
Lighting too many cigarettes
From already-lit cigarettes
Leaving ash behind.

Fumbling fingers flim-flam about:
Scratch the dog,
Scratch the cat,
Uncomplicating the comfort of touch.

Everything feels like too much.
It needs a professional fix,
Like my life.
Overwhelmed.

Sit a spell,
Take your shoes off,
Center yourself now, breathe. . .
Perhaps a cozy fire. . .

"Cough, cough, gasp."
Don't panic!
Open the flue and
The smoke will clear.

Grey silted fog creeps into its exit
Through the open door, to cold atmosphere.
Now rushing in, damp, chilled,
Like some kind of original sin.

"Beep, beep, beep,"
Emitted most shrilly.
The smoke alarm works,
Now, most surely.

Is it the smoke alarm
Or is it my heart?
Some kind of alarm
Went off at the start.

Brewing one more pot of coffee.
Lighting one more cigarette.
A little less overwhelmed
When the air is clean and fresh.

Smoke comes of fire,
Trails of airy distraction.
I've got to leap from this train
Vacant of self-satisfaction.
