The history of a house, the stuff they never tell you when they're selling.
Dampering wiggle-sigh, shake in the aftermath
Calculate results and be ruthless and sharp
Coal wet from rain, not burning no more
Flint struck to flame, spark grown to blaze
Language of silence, born in the past
Brought to the present, pressed into use
Set against humour, jaundice and pain
Haven't you heard what happened to Mary?
Sliced with a knife that glows red in the fire
Singed to impurity, trained to forgive
Forgive and forget and don't talk to strangers
Sing to your mother on her dying bed
Sing songs of hate and an innocence lost
And swallow your tears when she opens her eyes
- Gold and a grin and a trustworthy friend
An airplane that shudders and grinds to a halt
Blue coming in, blue bouncing out again
Coming and going, snippets of hearsay
Gossip of guns and a shfting ice floe
A continent slid to the west, go West
- God and a gin and a shot of espresso
College kids tell you, coffee is love
Cats breaking plates, a yowl from the kitchen
Polly put the kettle on, the blood got cold
Won't you have some water with your wine?
- Go on in and have a look around
Seventy million bucks down the drain
I'm selling this beauty at just half the price
I mean, what could happen? Who possibly knows?
It ain't oozing class, and that's all I can say
Just take a deep breath and don't miss the step
It's not like stuff drips down the walls.
