An Old Friend
An old friend returned to my side.
I never sent out invitations,
But he plopped himself down,
Whined, and waggled his tail.
What else could I do but just shrug?
Except for awhile when I scolded.
“Go away,” I yelled several times,
But those eyes of his were chocolates
That melted my heart once again;
So that night he slept on my bed.
Why should I want a sorry, old dog
With his fleas and his terrible snores?
I was happy without him. I hardly cried.
I’d given his dish and his leash away.
I was almost recovered and then. . .
An old friend returned to my side,
After chasing the neighborhood cats,
And being a Romeo during the night;
Now he’s whining and wagging.
What else can I do but just shrug?
