Scene 1: The way things are
Narrator: At some point in time there was a young girl named Sora. Sora was born into a wealthy, loving family. All of that changed however when she was twelve years old. Four months after she had turned twelve her mother disappeared. It was said that she was kidnapped by a group of gypsies on her way to the next town. Shortly after her mothers disappearance her father also disappeared. Sora is now in the care of a friend of the family named Kaster. Kaster has recently fallen to the black arts of witchcraft and therefore treats Sora poorly. Let’s see what happens today.
SD: The curtain lifts. A girl is scrubbing the floor and a woman has a belt in hand.
Kaster: Sora. Do yourself a favor and work just a little bit faster. The woman named Kaster takes out a cigarette and lights it. Honestly though people are always saying children are much faster than adults. They are just as slow.
Sora: I’m sorry I’ll clean faster.
Kaster: This is a valuable life lesson for you. In life you must always be fast. Everything has to be done as fast as possible with no error. Besides these floors need to be cleaned for the party tomorrow night.
Narrator: This is how Sora’s life is now. It is no longer happy but Sora is always hopeful that her parents will return home.
Kaster (agitated voice): You know you have to work too. So get too it.
Narrator: AAH! Yes mam. Picks up brush and pail of water. I mean ahem…While Kaster was watching Sora clean Prince David is approaching. He should be arriving in 5,4,3,2,1. He’s here.
Prince David: Good afternoon miss…?
SD: Kaster gives Prince David her hand and he kisses it she then kisses his hand in return.
Kaster: Welcome to the Wilkins estate I am the Lady of the estate my name is Kaster. You are?
Prince David: I am Prince David of Hanglethrope. My father is on his deathbed and wishes to make me king five days before he dies. So I am searching for a maiden between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two years.
Kaster: Oh I see. Please sit and chat.
SD: The two sit across from one another.
Kaster: Sora, go get dressed and bring tea.
Sora: Yes Ms. Kaster.
SD: Sora walks out of view.
Prince David: Who is that girl?
Kaster: She is the daughter of the Sir Wallace Wilkins.
Prince David: Well! I thought she was only a story. I had heard that the Wilkins family was long gone and that only a beautiful maiden remained to take care of the house.
Kaster: Well yes I am the caretaker of the house. Sora is much to young to take care of the house by her self.
Prince David: Agreed. How old is she?
Kaster: She turned sixteen three weeks ago.
Prince David: So she is not that young. But not yet old enough to take care of a household.
Kaster: Exactly. I have been caring for her since she was twelve. Such a Poor little thing. I set her to work to keep her mind off of her parents.
Prince David: Yes I was wondering why she was working if she is the daughter of Sir Wallace Wilkins.
Kaster: Well when her parents were gone she would lock herself in her room and do nothing but cry. She had to get out and do something.
Prince David: True.
Kaster: So about your marriage. Why exactly did you come here?
Prince David: Well I had heard rumors about you. I was intrigued and decided to come. I also heard rumors about Sora. I wasn’t sure if they were real or not though. Now that I am here I am quite pleased. I wish to marry Sora. I know I did want to marry you. But think of what my father would say.
Kaster: Of course your father. What would he say?
Prince David: He wants me to marry someone young and able to bear many sons.
Kaster: What else is new? How old are you anyways?
Prince David: I just turned twenty-nine. My father says it is high time for me to marry. So I am looking for my bride. I would like to see or court Sora.
Kaster: Well there’s no beating around the bush for you. However, there is a thirteen-year difference.
Prince David: Age doesn’t matter. Besides there are many who marry those who are much younger or older.
SD: Sora returns on set in a clean afternoon dress and is carrying a tray. She sets the tray down.
Kaster: Sora, this is Prince David.
SD: Prince David takes her hand and kisses it. Sora kisses Prince Davids hand back.
Kaster: You may sit down Sora. Sora sits. Prince David is the prince of Hanglethrope. He is looking for a bride.
Prince David: Hello Sora. How are you?
Sora: I am fine thank you for asking.
Prince David: Very polite. Tell me Sora how are you enjoying life?
Sora: …It’s fine I guess. Nothing is ever certain though.
Prince David: Yes I agree. Life is full of suprises. Some are wonderful others not so wonderful. Tell me have you had a boyfriend yet? Do forgive me for the questions I am just curious as to how life is around these parts.
Sora: …I have not had a boyfriend.
Prince David: Oh I see.
SD: The three take a sip of their tea and set back down. A bird chirps in the distance.
Prince David: It’s so peaceful out here. Not like back home. There are always laws to be written. Never any time to rest. I like it out here. Tell me is it always this peaceful?
Kaster: Yes although it is a little boring sometimes. However there is always an open party to go to around here.
Prince David: Very interesting. Well I must go now. I have some business to attend to.
Kaster: We are having a party tomorrow night if you would like to come.
Prince David: Why I would love to come.
Kaster: It will be at seven o’clock.
Prince David: Thank you. I will come. Good-bye ladies.
SD: Prince David leaves. Kaster stands up.
Kaster: Finish cleaning the floors and put away the tea.
Sora: Yes mam.
Kaster: You know. He is interested in you. We’ll pick something for you to wear for tomorrow night’s party.
Sora: Are you sure? I’m sure he was just bluffing.
Kaster: Princes with money who have to get married do not bluff. Whether or not you agree. We shall see what happens.
Narrator: Prince David is a pig! He’s thirteen years older than Sora! This is preposterous! With this we end our first scene.
