Happiness is a state of mind, often independent of externalities.
TURN OF FATE—a sonnet

Why lament that He gave you so much pain?
Why think pleasures you have few and meagre?
Why wish to have joys again and again?
Why for a painless life be so eager?

Don’t think that you are burdened the utmost;
Just look around, you’ll find it is not true.
Some people are rich and of treasures boast,
But they too have troubles they always rue.

Life’s pleasure needs to be balanced with pain.
Pleasure and pain are sides of the same coin.
In mind only are thoughts of loss or gain.
Why should we ever ranks of mourners join?

Wisdom tells us it is the state of mind
That marks a turn as pleasant or unkind.
