A day in the life of someone who is homeless. Basic needs are institutionalized and timed.
Tenth Street Shuffle

Seven minutes to Sally's,
Half-an-hour til LINK.
The Tenth Street shuffle drags on
in slow measured beats.

Drop-in for some coffee
before doors close at five!
Be at Jubilee on Fridays:
gravy, grits, biscuits, eggs.

At fifteen past L.O.S.,
the place may be full.
Then go to the alleys,
or sleep by the church.

Appointments for meals,
for a place to keep sane,
for prescriptions or laundry,
for employment or sleep.

Be aware of your brethren,
along Tenth Street, they creep:
homeless and invisible,
timed to institutional beats.
