Swan Lessons

My child, dressed in her Minnie Mouse swimsuit, shivers in early morning. Wiggly excitement insulates her from water's chill.

"I go swimming now!"

She slips into water with her teacher. Her words ring dismissal, telling of future flights from feather-nested maternity.

I become a crooked branch, for occasional rest.
