It’s too heavy a burden, why must I carry?

A man walks up to me one day,
Says 'Son, you're going to be famous someday',
For what, I ask with an open mind,
'Just take this gun and the answer you'll find.'

But it's too heavy, I lift and say
'Never mind, you'll find the way.'
What way, I ask with a puzzled frown.
'Just take this bullet and fix it in now.'

Who are you sir, I ask again.
'Never mind that, just do as you're told,'
Are you my father, I want to know now.
'Perhaps you could call me that if you like.'

Father, dear father my gun makes me weary
It's too heavy a burden, why must I carry?
'For honor, for pride, for the love of your people'
'Just do as you're told and the answer will come.'

For people? What people?
Who cares about me?
Why save them when they care not for me?

Father, dear father what is this feeling?
The pain in my chest seems to burn deep within.
Father, dear father why is it so cold?
Can you no longer hear my anguished cries?

Alone, so alone
It's so cold in this place.
My gun seems to comfort me.
For it's my best friend you see

But then, a man walks up to me one day,
Says, 'Son, I'm going to make you famous today.'
I answer not, for I know not what to say.
'An Unknown Soldier you are and that's how it will stay.'
