A sad little story (entry for September's 100 Words (No Repeats!) Contest).
Potential Past

The dot grew rapidly in my mirror, became an SUV, then flew by much faster than allowed and quickly disappeared.  Those four young, laughing faces--briefly glimpsed--set me thinking.  What dreams fuel them?  Do bonds of unbreakable friendship point to a common future?  Whose carefree visage hides amazing intellect, driving purpose?  Was this era's Tennyson or Edison riding along?

Flashing lights from behind interrupted these thoughts, preceding wailing sirens as emergency vehicles swept past, clearly headed toward thick smoke just becoming visible over tree-clad hills.

Two curves later, disaster lies revealed.  Mourning days unlived, unexpected tears flow silently.
