Tools of my trade are words. Quill Awards Honorable Mention.
I HAD A FRIEND

Locked within a vortex where,
Every second lasts forever.
A frozen space of existence,
With ties I cannot sever.

I feel the rifle kick,
Hard against my shoulder.
I am a proud American,
I am a frightened soldier.

I’m looking for my friend,
Who in life cannot be found.
Then I see the blood run,
There upon the ground.

Caught upon the bridge,
Between the past and today.
With no means of escape,
Can’t get off either way.

Then comes my faithful friend,
Although him I cannot see.
I feel his presence by my side,
Once again to set me free.
