An under 300-word short story about someone buying a home.

“You’re sure this is the place?”

Kayla looked at the GPS on her phone, then up at the house they were parked in front of.

“According to Google Maps it is. Oh, there!”

She pointed to the brick column to the left of the wrought iron gate. Jackson followed her gaze to where the number “5166” could barely be seen between overgrowing vines, etched into a faded stone placard.

The house itself looked like something out of a scary movie. Tall, crooked spires with filmy windows looked out over a yard that little more than dirt and overgrown weeds. The siding on the house was rotten with cracks running across an entire side of the house in some cases. The wrought iron gate was bent and misshapen, and the brick wall surrounding the property looked like it was last maintained sometime in previous century.

“That’ll teach you to buy a house sight-unseen on the internet,” Kayla teased him. “At least we’ll have the best house on the block every Halloween.”

“You don’t think it’s actually haunted do you?” Jackson asked. He’d always been a little superstitious.

“Of course not, silly,” Kayla replied. “And it shouldn’t even bother you that you can make the numbers of our address equal 666.”

“What???”

“Sure. 5166. Five plus one is six. And 66. Six and 66. Six six six. But you’re not actually worried about that are you?”

“Now I am!” Jackson exclaimed. “I bought Satan’s Spanish Colonial Manor Home!”

“Well, it’s too late to do anything about it now,” Kayla mused. “Might as well head up the driveway and see if the Prince of Darkness has our keys for us.”
