Something Amiss in The Heat of the Day
The prompt: Write about a day of extremely unseasonable weather. What happens when the weather is all wrong?

This was entered in "The Writer's Cramp

The day seemed more like July
bright and sunny
but the length of it, the length of it - grazing in the meadow

Short, all too short and changed somehow
heat and promise
were our friends, but were they really?

Like fair-weather sorts who tell you what you want to hear
until they get the dominion and devotion they seek
and the horns are revealed

There are lots of them now in the fallow fields of time
but you can always tell the bad ones,
agree with them or you are on your own

And so Iago revealed her hidden nature
with a snap and a dismissal and all those whispers
not too much lost there, but altruistic claptrap

Friendship never existed to begin with -
the lie revealed for all to witness and worship
who are fooled by such things and so inclined

I should know
I was one fooled,
but no more when the sun shines on the pasture
I see what I see through my shades of time.
