On making new friends.
I was intending a befriending,
one new friendship pending;
heart to heart extending.

I celebrate the chance for friend
and hope that it will last awhile,
draw close with grin, a sincere smile
all without the need for money.
Today with hurry everywhere,
it may seem strange, even funny
walking tall with jutting chin
(Dad said to never lead with that)
because it is an easy target…
someone might take a whack.

Keep in your chin, withhold yourself,
yet doing so affords less chance
of someone warming up at last
and taking shyness off the shelf.
Attain a stronger chin, perhaps
or better yet, lead with your eyes
wherein there’ll be few thunderclaps
and less for others to despise.

Hello!  How are you?  A smile
is a simple thing, yet O so vital.
Most folks are guarded, though
because it is a guarded world
these days.
Sincerity creates a buzz,
yet insincerity betrays.

Old friends are comfort, strong and true;
yet time moves on, foundations shake.
Yet shaking hands with someone new
may energize for goodness sake.

(Show genuine interest, less talk
of self; we are sharing planet space
humanity is all one team, designated
human race…
why not extend an olive branch,
I just may reap the bounty.)

And so today I will befriend—
I think it will be time well spent.
