Old age isn't always a barrier to love

Crone and Sage

O

nce there were two turtle doves;
they both had mates but scoffed at love;

as playful youth had passed them by,
they found themselves alone and sighed

and now they gaze but hesitate:
too old, too achy, far too late

to fall in love, begin anew,
to know before they die what few

will ever know: a wrinkled face,
cold trembling hands, a warm embrace

to guard their hearts against old age;
lips meet, this wizened crone and sage.
