Failed Experiment

“Something’s gotta give. This is unacceptable.”

George threw the paper on the desk.

“I tried, boss. I really did.”

“You owe me an explanation, John. A really good explanation on how you lost all that money.”

“It wasn’t all that much,” said John with a grin.

“Not that much?” George’s shriek filled the office. He sat back in his chair, looked out the window at the cars below. “Not that much, he says.”

“I thought it was a good investment, that’s all. You told me to take chances.”

“Get out of here before I do or say something I may regret.”

“So that’s it? We’re through?” Buddy couldn’t believe it. He sat dejectedly, looking at John.

“Sorry Buddy. I thought George would agree, but seems the idea was a no-go.” He sat beside Buddy. “Not finishing your lunch?”

“I lost my appetite.”

“We’ll go back to the drawing board. Try it again, a different way.”

“Let’s face it, John. Throwing all that money to develop a talking dog didn’t work. I’m a failure. George didn’t like the idea. And now the other dogs see me as a traitor.” Buddy pushed his food around the silver bowl with a paw. “And this! This stuff is evil. But they,” he pointed to the other dogs in cages, “eat it, don’t say a word. Me? Now I can complain. But what does it get me? Ten more years in solitary. Thanks a lot!” Buddy walked back into his cage, shut the door.

John thought for a moment.

“I’ve got it! You’ll come home with me. Laurie will love you. Let’s go.”

After a few weeks, John and Buddy had to find a new place to live. Laurie got tired of a dog telling her what to do.
