Water Song

We are born and baptized in water.
In the morning while my coffee brews
I chant an Algonquin water song
to the four directions.
Nee bee wah bow, en dion....
I do not know the words.
All the ancient peoples had water prayers.
In Florida's dry season we petition for rain.
In the wet season we curse the winds and floods.
When I die I will send my ashes in a pod
to the bottom of the Gulf.
I want a physicist at my wake
to explain that matter and energy are never lost.
My grandchildren will sing a water song.
