Masquerade

The treaty expired at 11:59 pm on March 31. All magical protection of supernatural creatures was voided as of 12 am April 1. Ordinary humans awoke to a world suddenly populated with mythological creatures. Imagine Sally Mae's surprise when she discovered her milkman was actually a minotaur, turns out his wife and sister-in-law were part of the herd providing the milk. Georgie awoke to discover her dalmatian was actually a dwarf unicorn. And the whole world awoke to the surprise that The President of the United States was a four-eyed beardless troll. Well, that wasn't too much of a surprise.

A trip to the store became interesting. People discovered that the mechanical workings of the dairy cases and frozen food section were actually midget frost giants. That the misters in the produce section were actually fairies sprinkling dust that prolonged the freshness of the vegetables. In all seriousness, the realities of modern life were much more surreal and supernatural than most people would admit.

But the absolute biggest surprise in the world was the day about two weeks later when the news finally broke that the population wasn't nearly as surprised as they had acted. The mythological community had discussed how nonplussed the humans had been by the end of the treaty. The reality was that the people had known all along that the mythological community existed in such depth in their society. They had been quiet about it for fear that the mythological community would take advantage of them. When the average human on the street was asked how a troll had been elected president, the overwhelming answer was that he had been the best option.

*Idea*Create a short story based on the following prompt;

Broken Masquerade:

If you've ever seen Men in Black or Harry Potter, or any other movie where aliens, fantasy creatures, people with supernatural powers exist, yet Normal Humans don't know that they exist, because some dudes in black suits, or wand-wavers, alter the minds of Normals, so that they don't remember the oddities, or there's a device that makes the non-humans look Human. Well, what happens when the devices and spells malfunction, and the Masquerade is Broken, and now everyone knows the Truth? Time for the Story.

Possible Plots -

1. Normies Knew Along - they merely pretended to not remember when those dudes did those Memory Erasing Tricks.

2. Nothing New - Folks act like nothing has changed, aside from maybe the bank teller having pointy ears, and solid black eyes, and claws, and the person bagging their groceries is actually a centaur.

3. Freak-out! Is it the sight of these beings that causes the screaming, or is it because someone's merely less dressed than allowed.

4. Conflict! There's fighting in the streets.

5. Multiple Masquerades Broken - Aliens are just as surprised to find out that Fantasy Creatures exist, and vice-versa, just as humans are surprised to find out about both of them.

6. Open Choice - Come up with your own Plot. Maybe you could combine two of the prior options.
