“I think sometimes the solution to our worries and doubts is simply to do something; it doesn’t really matter what it is.”
Marion sat down at the kitchen table, set her coffee cup down and without a thought straightened out the placemat in front of her, aligning it parallel to the table’s edge.
“There’s nothing worse than doing nothing,” she continued. “I mean, others always tell me that I do too much, that I need to take better care of myself, and I certainly make time for that,” - she stopped suddenly, and a look of subtle terror came over her face.
“Doing nothing,” she said, “is simultaneously the easiest out to take but the hardest burden to bear. It’s easy to quit, to stop. You can pretend you don’t care about making your life the best it can be, but I don’t believe anyone truly feels that way.”
“You can’t be serious.” said Lena. “Your life and the way you go about your day makes me wonder if you truly know what it means to do nothing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you rest. Even sitting here, having coffee with you, listening to the rain fall outside, you seem tense.”
“...That’s not a very helpful thing to say, is it?”
“On the contrary, I think it’s exactly what you need to hear. Ever since you lost Dan in the accident, you haven’t been able to relax since. We all understand, Marion, we really-”
“YOU understand nothing!” Marion fought back her tears as she tore into Lena. “Since when do you know how it feels to lose everything?!”
Lena, hurt and taken aback, tenderly touched her stomach and replied, “I know more than you think I do.”
