Sometimes reading can be dangerous
Short Shots Image Prompt (March 2023)

In the small town of Tyndall there was a small, dusty bookstore tucked away on a quiet street corner. The store was run by an elderly man named Mr. Cambert, who had been in the book business for over 50 years. Despite his age, Mr. Cambert loved nothing more than helping his customers find the perfect book to suit their tastes. No matter their taste sometimes.

One day, a young woman entered the store looking for a particular book. She was polite and well-spoken, but there was something about her that made Mr. Cambert uneasy. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but there was an air of darkness that surrounded her. It sent shivers down his spine.

The young woman browsed the shelves for a while before finally approaching Mr. Cambert with her request. She asked for a copy of an old, obscure book that he had never heard of before. It was a book on ancient magic, and she explained that it was essential for the development of her research.

Mr. Cambert rummaged through his collection of books but could not find the one she was looking for. He apologized and suggested she try a different bookstore. However, the young woman insisted that she needed that particular book and left her contact information with Mr. Cambert, requesting he contacts her if he ever came across a copy.

Several weeks later, Mr. Cambert received a call from a nearby estate sale informing him that they had a copy of the book the young woman was looking for. Excited to help his customer, Mr. Cambert rushed to the sale and purchased the book. Knowing he would make a large profit in the process.

He returned to his shop and called the young woman, telling her he had found the book she had been searching for. She came to the store eagerly to purchase the book, thanking Mr. Cambert for his help but decided at the last minute she did not want the book.

But from that day on, strange things began to happen in the bookstore. At night, books would fall off the shelves, doors would creak open, and the temperature would drop suddenly to an almost wintery chill. Mr. Cambert felt an eerie presence in the store, and the feeling only intensified when he entered the room where the ancient magic book was kept.

One night, Mr. Cambert decided to investigate the strange occurrences. He grabbed a flashlight and headed towards the room with the book. When he opened the door, he was met with an ominous aura emanating from the book, which seemed to be vibrating with energy.

Suddenly, the book flew off the shelf and opened to a page that seemed to be glowing with an otherworldly light. Mr. Cambert picked up the book and, read the page, and as he did, the room filled with a blinding light, and he felt a dark force pulling him into the book's pages.

The next day, the bookstore was closed for good, and Mr. Cambert was nowhere to be found. Some say that he was swallowed up by the haunted book, forever trapped within its pages. And others say that the book itself disappeared, and was never seen again.

Regardless of what happened, the bookstore remained empty, and no one dared to enter the room where the haunted book had been kept. The legend of the cursed book continued to haunt the town for generations to come, warning people to beware of magic and the dark forces that can be summoned.
