More dark clouds are forming..
Chapter 11.

Thursday evening and Jeff stood preening himself in the living room mirror before going off to the banger racing in West London. Sue looked into the room. "You're only going to watch the races, you're not going on a date. Or are you? Have you got a bit on the side or something?"

"Don't be daft. I couldn't keep two sexy women like you happy, could I?"

"If you're talking about sex, you couldn't keep one happy."

Jeff gave a laugh. "Cheeky cow." He walked to the street door and called back to her. "Don't wait up for me, Sue. I'll probably have a drink with the lads."

Sue looked out into the passage. "You won't be that late, will you?"

         "About eleven I should think."

"I'm not a child. I won't be in bed at that time of night, will I? Anyway, when will your own motor be ready?"

"It'll be a while yet, there's lots of work involved."

"I haven't been to the races for ages and I still don't see why you want to go when you're not racing."

"I have to support my teammates, don't I?"

"Well, get them teammates to help you to get your old banger ready. We could have a night out at the stadium with Anne and Dave."

"Yeah, that'll be nice. Look, I'll have to go or I'll be late."

Jeff left and Sue went to the bedroom and modified her makeup as if she were going out somewhere. She took off her jeans and tights and put on a short skirt and a pair of ankle socks. She looked over at the clock and realising she still had almost an hour to wait. She went back to the living room and turned on the television before pouring herself a large gin and tonic.

Seven thirty and the knock on her front door was later than she expected. "What's going on, Dave? You're a bit late, aren't you?" she said, more in anger than disappointment.

"Yeah, her mate couldn't pick her up so I had to run her to the bingo hall myself."

"Oh well, can't be helped, I suppose. What do you want, a G and T or a drop of his Martel?"

         "A brandy would be nice."

She went to pour his drink, but he was right behind her and he put his arms around her waist and began kissing her neck. "Watch it, Dave, you'll make me spill the drink."

"To hell with the drink," he said. She turned around and they began a passionate embrace as they fumbled and stumbled across the room and onto the sofa.

It was eleven-thirty when Anne arrived home and Dave was not happy. He left Sue at ten o'clock to go and pick her up but could find no sign of her leaving the bingo hall.

"Where the hell have you been?"

"You know where I've been. You bloody dropped me off, didn't you?"

"I did yes, and I would have bloody picked you up as well, but you weren't there, were you?"

         "Yes, I was."

"I waited outside until the crowds went, then I went inside to see if you were at the bar."

"Oh. Well, it was one of the girls' birthday so we went out the other entrance and called at The Fountain for a drink."

         "Well, why didn't you say?"

"I didn't know you were going to be there, did I? And don't you start all that bloody possessive stuff with me."

"I'm not, but if you're not careful you'll end up like my mum. She goes off to the bingo twice a week and never wins sod all."

"I don't go to win, it's a night out with the girls; if I win it's a bonus. Anyway, would you rather I went out pubbing it?"

         "You did."

"Look, I'll try not to let it happen again all right. I'll make sure I'm in before the clock strikes ten. Jesus, you're worse than my dad. Five weeks we've been together, five weeks, who knows what it'll be like after five years."

         "Make me a coffee."

"Piss off, make it yourself," Anne said. "Anyway, what have you been doing all night? I thought you were going to make a start on the bedrooms."

         "Yeah, maybe tomorrow."

"I'm going to bed and I suppose because you're sulking you won't be coming up yet."

"I'm not sulking, there's a cowboy film on later and I'm not in the mood for sex anyway."

"Good, because you won't be getting any so don't bother waking me up when you come to bed. I'll see you tomorrow," she said and slammed the door on her way out. She was soon in bed, but couldn't settle. She had loving images invading her thoughts. She had not stopped at the the bingo hall but had gone back to secretly meet Jeff for an evening in, The Prince Regent, his local bar. She was getting fed up with Dave's attitude and although she was a little reluctant to accept Jeff's offer at first, she thought that maybe he could cheer her up. However, she was not thinking of Jeff, nor was she thinking of Dave. She had images of a lost love, images of intense passion. "Piss off, Eddie," she whispered to herself. "I'm trying to get to sleep."

When Dave got home from work on Tuesday Anne was sitting in one of their armchairs and he dropped onto the other one. "It's great to find you at home when I get in from work, instead of waiting for you to come home from The Burger Bar. Are you starting at The Fountain tonight?"

"Hold on will you, I haven't even asked them for the job yet. Anyway, I thought you were fetching a curry in from the Chinese."

"I'll go in a minute, I just thought I'd check if Sue had done any tea for Jeff. They could have come over."

         "She has then?"

"Yeah, but she's going out anyway. Her dad's took a bad turn and she's going over to Dagenham to see him."

"Jeff could've still come over and had some dinner with us."

"Too late now, it was on the table for him when we walked in."

"Well, get going then, I'm bloody starving."

"Aren't I entitled to a bit of a rest when I get in from work?"

"No, you can have a rest after dinner, and before you start moaning, I've done all the washing and ironing of your grubby clothes today."

Dave smiled and stood up. "All right, I won't be long, but I'm doing nothing else tonight."

Anne was eager for him to leave although she tried not to show it and she sat staring at the television as if she were interested in the program. After Dave had gone Anne hurried off down the street to see Jeff, hoping that Sue had already left. Although she had only previously met Jeff for an evening out, she was keen to see him again and to thank him.

The front door at Jeff's house was unlocked and Jeff was surprised when Anne opened the door and walked into the passage."What are you doing here?” he said.

“Just thought I’d pop over to thank you for the other night. Hasn't she gone yet?"

“No, she's just gone for a quick bath before her mother picks her up and what's Dave doing?"

"He's gone for a take away curry. I stopped you from kissing me the other night because I thought it would lead to something more. But I felt sorry about it afterwards and thought you deserved a reward.” They stood silent for a moment, listening. Sue started to sing a Karen Carpenter song while she was relaxing in the bath. "You gave me such a good night that I feel I cheated you. So, Jeff, let’s have the kiss and cuddle we should have had after the lovely evening you gave me, and then I'd best get back."

Jeff looked towards the bathroom. "No, Anne, it's too risky."

Anne took the lead and walked over and began kissing him. What started as a quick kiss soon progressed into a sensual embrace, but while their lips were joined in passion and their hands were roving, their hearing remained fixed on Sue's singing. If the singing stopped then so would their embrace. It was, therefore, unexpected when the street door suddenly opened and Sue's mother walked in.

"What the hell's going on?" she shouted.

The couple shot apart and Anne turned away slightly as she fastened the top buttons on her blouse.

"Mum, is that you?" Sue shouted from the bathroom.

"Look, it's not how it seems," Jeff said. "Don't say nothing to Sue, I'll explain it all to you later."

"No, lad, you don't have to explain anything to me." She looked away from him as if in disgust. "Susan," she shouted. "You better get out here, now."

"You'd better go, Anne," Jeff said.

"You just stay where you are, young lady."

Sue rushed out from the bathroom in a soaked dressing gown thinking that there was a problem with her father. "What's the matter, what's happened?" She noticed the embarrassed and guilty look that Anne had about her, looking as if she were a naughty child that has just been caught stealing. "What are you doing here?"

"I just caught them,"Sue's mother said. " Looked as if they were trying to eat each other and his hands were all over her breasts."

Sue ignored Anne and looked straight at Jeff. "You, and her?"

"Look, there's nothing in it, it was just a bit of a laugh that got out of hand. Wasn't it, Anne?"

Anne looked back at him and shrugged her shoulders. She looked away and began looking towards the floor so as to avoid everyone's eyes; feeling it would be best to just keep quiet.

"Nothing in it," the woman shouted. "I warned you he was no good, didn't I? You're too good for him. He's got no morals."

         "You cheating bastards," Sue yelled.

"Oh, you can talk," Jeff yelled back.

         "What's that supposed to mean?"

"The whole street knows you and Dave are having it off."

         "You what," Anne said.

"I'm sorry, Anne, but look at her, gone bright red with guilt. She can't deny it. She can't deny it the old slag."

Sue kneed Jeff in his thigh. He glared at her and was about to verbally abuse her again when her mother's handbag crashed across his head. Sue began slapping him wildly and her mother began punching him. He tried to retreat into the living room, but they followed him continually raining blows at his face and body. Anne thought this might be a good time to leave and she slipped out through the front door.

Dave was at home when she returned and he had already started dishing out the curry and rice. "Where have you been?"

"I've been over to Sue and Jeff's. There's an almighty row going on over there. Do you know what it's about, Dave?"

         "No, of course, I don't."

"Oh, yes you do. It's about you and Sue having an affair." She picked up a plate of curry to aim at him, but he knocked it from her hand and sent it spinning across the room, shedding its load onto the carpet.

"Pack it in, Anne, I don't know what the hell you're talking about."

"Don't you dare try and deny it. How could you, Dave? I'm carrying your baby and you're across there at every opportunity having it off with her."

"Of course I'm not. Who said I was?"

"They bloody did, they both know about it, all the fucking street knows about it. He's gone mad. Jeff's gone mad and he's beating the crap out of her. You'd better get over there and stop him before he kills her," Anne said, knowing Dave was concerned.

Dave sat down but stood up again. "You can clean that mess up off the carpet," he yelled. "I'll go and see what's going on and we'll sort this all out."

Anne used her little untruth as a means to gain her a few minutes to throw some things into bags before setting off for her parents' house. As she stepped outside she could hear the shouting. She looked along the road towards Sue's house and saw the men throwing punches at each other in the street while Sue and her mother were screaming abuse at the pair of them. Anne turned and hurried off in the other direction.
