My blog for the birthday relay
It had started as a joke. The group of friends were all far from their families and homes so they had made the decision to celebrate their birthdays as the dates fell. That wasn’t the joke though, the jokes were the cakes that had started the third year they celebrated. Rae was tired of the same boring chocolate or vanilla cakes and had been trying to think of something different. Then Stefan almost cut his finger off at work one day. Rae’s eyes had lit up when he was telling the story over drinks a few days later, but no one thought anything of it until a few weeks later.
Rae had insisted on getting the cake for his birthday and the six friends gathered at her apartment, waiting for her to present the cake. When she reappeared from the kitchen, they all laughed as she set a hand with four severed fingers in front of Stefan. “In commemoration of your adventure,” she said as she handed him a knife.
And that started the tradition.
For Tyson, the cake presented was a car with a crumpled bumper.
Blair got a casted leg as he’d fallen when rock climbing and broken her leg.
Laine’s cake had a facsimile of her face with the horrible haircut she got when she tried something new. The friends had laughed over that one, even as Laine carefully cut the hair.
The next one, Carrie’s, wasn’t so much a disaster as she almost always missed the bus at least once a week. Her cake was actually two as a girl with long blonde hair chased after a city bus.
WIth three weeks until Rae’s birthday, Laine, Carrie, and Blair cornered her. “Where are you getting the cakes?” Carrie asked.
“The bakery around the corner,” Rae said. She frowned as the three friends exchanged glances.
When they gathered for Rae’s birthday, the friends presented her with an arm with a dog’s jaws around it. Rae glanced at the bandage on her arm and shook her head. “Maybe we should go back to normal cakes?” she suggested.
