A blog about music from my unique perspective (also a spot for some poetry I’ve written) |
| Well, well, it's that time of year again, when Xmas music reigns supreme and we turn to our favorites to distract from the junk noise surrounding us. I'll begin with an instrumental rendition of Carol of the Bells by Simply Three: a cello, a violin and a bass (violin.) The melody of Carol of the Bells has always fascinated me. I never knew what it was as a kid, and it was one of those songs that took me years to track down. The lyrics are rather brainless and syncopated, serving only to bounce off the musical melody and set the Christmas tone. I prefer it without. Depending on the production, it can feel hypnotic, soothing, mysterious, or unnerving. The Simply Three rendition comes from their Lux holiday album, released in 2021. This album has a distinctive edginess to the style, approaching classic songs with a fresh flair. Indeed, sometimes it can be over the top weird. I'm not even sure how I ended up with this particular version… Surely there's a more elegant one I could have chosen! It begins quietly, ominously, then builds up to a rapid, looping repeat, with throbbing bass clashes and a downright manic depravity about the hook, then draws to a close with surprisingly little resolution. The more I listen to it, the less I like it. I should use my 90 days of free Amazon Music Premium to look for some fresh Christmas music. My playlist is getting stale. Enjoy, if you can. Quite frankly, I don't recommend it. Words: 255. |
