| On Getting Older I know what it is about old age that makes it less than enjoyable. It destroys the trust youth puts in its body. Those physical functions that were once so reliable and trusted become the source of our waking reflections on the human condition. The first time some aspect of our material being breaks down and brings our fragility into awful clarity, is the moment when our happy presumption of immortality begins to decay. As these signs of our ultimate sell by date multiply, our concentration shifts to an uneasy alertness to the signals of frailty in our bodily functions. It’s no wonder that our aches and pains become the subject we are most familiar with, our growing special interest and study. Is there a solution to this terrible progression? Perhaps the only answer is to learn how to embrace the approaching denouement. It is, after all, a part of life and, in a way, defines the reason for our existence. Word count: 161 |
