Fun Run

The goal is simple: build a writing habit.

Fun Run is the
first event of WdC Writing Season and takes place during the month of September. Just like a community fun run, the goal isn't to finish first... it's simply to get moving.

Whether you're returning after a long break or just getting started, Fun Run is designed to help you build a writing habit and discover how quickly steady progress adds up.

Fun Run welcomes every kind of writer. Whether you're writing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, journals, blogs, memoirs, or something entirely your own, every word counts toward your goal.

This isn't a race against other writers. It's simply an opportunity to challenge yourself, celebrate your progress, and enjoy writing alongside the rest of the Writing.Com community.

Think of Fun Run as the foundation for the rest of Writing Season. By the end of September, you'll have built momentum, established a writing habit, and be ready for the adventures that await throughout the rest of Writing Season.

Choose Your Goal

Before you begin, choose the writing goal that's right for you.

You can register for either:
5K (5,000 words)
10K (10,000 words)

If you're new to writing challenges or simply have a busy month ahead, the 5K goal is a great place to start.

If you're looking for a little more of a challenge, choose the 10K goal.

Remember, this is your writing journey. Choose the goal that feels achievable, motivating, and fun for you.

Changing Your Goal

If you start with the 5K and decide you'd like more of a challenge, you can upgrade to the 10K at any time during September.

Daily Writing

Each day you'll have several different writing prompts available if you need inspiration, or you can simply continue your own project.

Use whichever prompt inspires you. Mix and match them throughout the month, or ignore them completely. You're always welcome to write whatever you'd like.

Join activities throughout the community and use your writing from those activities toward your Fun Run word count goal. Items displaying the Fun Run icon are compatible and can help you reach your Writing Season goals!
Signature to show that an item is compatible with Fun Run; writing can be used for both!

Fun Run isn't about what you write. It's about making time to write. Every word counts exactly the same, no matter what you choose to write.

Your Event Writing

Everything you write for Fun Run is stored directly within the event.

You can quickly add writing using the editor on the Fun Run page or open the larger Writing Room whenever you'd like more space to write, edit, or organize your work.

Prefer writing somewhere else first?

No problem! Simply paste your writing into your Fun Run editor or Writing Room.

Your progress updates automatically each time you save.

Throughout the month, you can copy or download your writing whenever you'd like. Once Fun Run has officially ended, you'll also be able to turn everything you wrote into a portfolio item with just a few clicks.

Not sure whether to create a Writing Item or a Book? Writing Items are perfect for shorter works like stories, poems, essays, and journal entries. If you've written a longer, chapter-based project during the event, paid members can also choose to create a Book instead.

Missed a Day?

Don't worry. Life happens.

Fun Run isn't about writing every single day. It's about reaching your personal goal by the end of the month.

Miss a few days?

Simply pick up where you left off and keep writing.

Registration remains open throughout September, so even if you're joining later in the month, you're still welcome to participate.

Milestones, Merit Badges & Awardicons

Every word moves you one step closer to the finish line.

As you write, you'll unlock milestone celebrations and earn special Fun Run Merit Badges when you reach 5K and 10K.

These milestones recognize your progress, celebrate your accomplishments, and help keep you motivated all month long.

When Fun Run officially ends, you'll also receive a Portfolio Awardicon based on the goal you completed.
• Finish the 5K and earn the Fun Run 5K Ribbon.
• Finish the
10K and earn the Fun Run 10K Medal.

Reach 5K to earn the 5K Merit Badge, then keep going to 10K to earn the 10K Merit Badge, too!

Completing this event also brings you one step closer to earning the
Writing Season Triple Crown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register after Fun Run has already started?
Absolutely! Registration remains open throughout September, so you're welcome to join whenever you're ready.

Do I have to write every day?
No. Write whenever your schedule allows. Your goal is based on your total word count by the end of the month, not perfect attendance.

Do I have to use the daily prompts?
Not at all. The prompts are there if you need inspiration, but you're always free to write anything you'd like.

Can I work on an existing project?
Yes! Continue your novel, write short stories, journal, brainstorm, write poetry, or work on anything else you'd like.

Can I submit more than once a day?
Absolutely! You can add as much writing as you'd like throughout Fun Run. Every new word counts toward your goal.

Can I write more than my goal?
Absolutely! Reaching your goal is worth celebrating, but you're welcome to keep writing for the rest of the month.

Can I switch from 5K to 10K?
Yes! If you start with 5K, you can upgrade to 10K at any time during the Fun Run.

Can I edit my writing after I save it?
Yes. Your Writing Room allows you to return and edit your writing whenever you'd like.

Will my writing automatically become public?
No. Your event writing is private unless you choose otherwise in your Privacy Settings.

What if I finish my goal early?
Congratulations! Celebrate your accomplishment, then keep writing if you'd like. Every additional word is progress, and the rest of the month is yours to enjoy.

Ready to Get Started?

Whether your goal is 5,000 words or 10,000 words, every writer begins exactly the same way... with the first word.

Choose your goal, write your first words, and enjoy the journey alongside the rest of the Writing.Com community.

Have fun, and we'll see you at the finish line!
