The goal is simple: focus on your project and write.
Marathon is the third and final event of WdC Writing Season and takes place during the month of November.
After spending September building a writing habit and October strengthening your skills, November is your opportunity to focus on the writing project that matters most to you.
Whether you're writing a novel, memoir, nonfiction book, poetry collection, family history, or another ambitious project, Marathon gives you an entire month of time, space, and encouragement to make meaningful progress.
Marathon isn't about writing the perfect book. It's about moving your project forward, one word at a time.
Choose the word-count goal that's right for you, settle in, and enjoy writing alongside a community that's cheering you on every step of the way.
Choose Your Goal
Before you begin, choose the writing goal that best fits your experience, schedule, and ambitions.
Choose one of the following goals:
• 25K (25,000 words)
• 50K (50,000 words)
• 75K (75,000 words)
• 100K (100,000 words)
Whether this is your first big writing challenge or your biggest one yet, choose a goal that motivates and excites you.
Changing Your Goal
Started with one goal and feeling ready for more?
You can upgrade your Marathon goal at any time during November.
Choose the challenge that's right for you and see just how far your writing can take you.
Free Writing
Unlike Fun Run and Base Camp, Marathon doesn't include daily prompts or required tasks. This month belongs entirely to your project.
Continue your novel. Write a memoir. Build a nonfiction book. Finish a poetry collection. Explore a new idea. Pick up an unfinished manuscript. Whatever you're working toward, every new word moves you closer to your goal.
Your Event Writing
Everything you write during Marathon is stored directly inside the event.
Write using the editor on the Marathon page or open the larger Writing Room whenever you'd like more room to think, write, or edit.
Throughout the month you can copy or download your writing whenever you'd like.
Join activities throughout the community and use your writing from those activities toward your Marathon word count goal. Items displaying the Marathon icon are compatible and can help you reach your Writing Season goals!
Once Marathon has officially ended, you'll be able to turn everything you wrote into a portfolio item with just a few clicks.
Not sure whether to create a Writing Item or a Book? Writing Items are perfect for shorter works like stories, poems, essays, and journal entries. If you've written a longer, chapter-based project during the event, paid members can also choose to create a Book instead.
Milestones, Merit Badges & Portfolio Awardicons
Every milestone is another step toward your finish line.
As your word count grows, you'll unlock milestone celebrations that recognize your progress throughout the month.
When Marathon officially ends, you'll receive a Portfolio Awardicon based on the highest goal you completed.
• Finish 25K and earn the Marathon 25K Plaque Awardicon.
• Finish 50K and earn the Marathon 50K Trophy Awardicon.
• Finish 75K and earn the Marathon 75K Trophy Awardicon.
• Finish 100K and earn the Marathon 100K Trophy Awardicon.
As you reach 25K, 50K, 75K, and 100K, you'll earn the Merit Badge for each milestone you complete. Keep writing and you can earn them all during the same Marathon!
Completing this event also brings you one step closer to earning the Writing Season Triple Crown.
