Sometimes the best way to get words on the page is to give yourself a clock and just WRITE! Writing Sprints are timed writing sessions you can join on your own or alongside other Writing.Com members.
Choose a sprint, enter the room, and write until the timer runs out. You can see your word count grow as you go and, if you're writing with others, watch everyone else's progress too.
Find a Writing Sprint
You can find Writing Sprints under Community in the main navigation.
The Sprints page shows active and upcoming sprints you can join, along with recently ended sprints and any drafts you still have saved.
To join one, simply find the sprint you want and click Enter Room. Anyone with a Writing.Com account can participate in a sprint.
Community sprints run every day at 2am, 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm and 10pm WDC time. Everyone is welcome to join.
Inside the Sprint Room
Once you're inside, you'll have a writing editor, a countdown timer, and a list of the other members participating.
Then... write!
Your word count updates as you go so you can keep an eye on your progress. If other members are sprinting with you, you can also see their word counts climbing alongside yours.
Want to concentrate only on your own words? You can Pause the live updates or Hide the sprinter list completely.
Start Your Own Sprint
Paid members can host their own Writing Sprints. Click Start a New Sprint and choose your sprint's title, optional writing prompt, duration, content rating, and number of participants.
You can also choose whether your sprint is:
Public — listed so other members can find and join it.
Link Only — available only to members who have the direct link.
The number of people you can host depends on your membership:
Basic: Up to 10 sprinters
Upgraded: Up to 25 sprinters
Premium and above: Up to 50 sprinters
Premium members and above can also schedule a sprint up to 14 days in advance. Basic and Upgraded members can host sprints that begin immediately.
Your Writing & Autosave
Your sprint writing is automatically saved to your device while you work, so closing and reopening the sprint page on the same device won't make you lose your draft.
You cannot switch devices in the middle of a sprint and continue the same draft.
When the timer runs out, you'll be taken to the sprint results page where you can decide what you want to do with your writing.
When the Sprint Ends
Your sprint doesn't have to disappear when the clock hits zero! You can:
Save as Writing
Create a new Writing item in your portfolio using your sprint writing.
Save as a Book Entry
Add your writing as a new entry in one of your existing Books.
Keep It For Later
Leave the draft in your Sprint Drafts while you decide what to do with it.
Discard It
Delete the draft if you don't want to keep it.
Unsaved sprint drafts are kept for 7 days after the sprint ends. You can find them under the My Drafts tab on the Writing Sprints page. After seven days, they are automatically removed.
Writing With Other Sprinters
Writing together is part of the fun, but you still have control over how much you share.
Choose Compete Privately if you don't want other sprinters to see your word count while you're writing. The sprint host will still be able to see that you've joined.
If you'd like the other members of your sprint to read what you've written afterward, choose Share My Draft After Sprint. Sharing is completely optional and is off by default. Shared drafts are only available to members who participated in that sprint and are removed when the sprint drafts expire.
A Few More Sprint Features
Sprint hosts have a few additional tools available to them. Depending on the status of the sprint, hosts can edit or cancel their sprint and, after it ends, send Gift Points or badges to participants.
Writing Sprints can also be referenced around Writing.Com using WritingML sprint tags. Click the sprint's ID number on its room or results page to quickly copy a tag for that sprint.
Ready? Set? WRITE!
Whether you're trying to break through writer's block, hit a word-count goal, or just want some company while you write, Writing Sprints are an easy way to get some words down without overthinking them.
