Worst Birthday Present. EVER
I should have known. I mean really. Should. Have. Known. When Ricky presented me with a birthday gift, I should have been prepared. And yet… I opened the box, expecting something nice.

And found soap.

That’s it. Soap.

Not even nice soap, that smelled lovely. Nope. Packed firmly into the box was twenty-four bars of soap. Cheap soap at that. The type that prisons or institutions bought by the truckload.

I looked up to find Ricky staring at me, a smile on his face. “Do you like it?” he asked.

“I…” I started and then realized it was never going to change. There was practical and then there was this. “I’ve made a mistake,” I declared, standing up from the table we’d been escorted to for dinner. More than likely, he’d intended to make me pay half. I dropped my cloth napkin on the table and picked up my caplet. “I’m done with you,” I informed him. “Done with you and your cheap ass practical gifts.” Wrapping my caplet around me, I stormed out of the restaurant.

Outside my steps slowed and I thought I might have been too hasty. But I deserved better than bars of soap for my birthday. Maybe I’d be alone, maybe I’d find someone new. But I was done with letting people walk all over me.

Raising my hand, I hailed a cab and road away to my destiny.
