for their daughters to be safe and secure. And so marriage appears to the best option. This thought pattern remains the same despite modernity in general.

So they enquire after the prospective bridegroom’s background which consists of his money prospects, job, health and brought-up. They also would take note of bad habits if he had any, such as smoking and drinking and character too. After weighing all these aspects carefully, parents on both sides agree. They also seek the girl’s or the boy’s willingness in getting married to the person of their parents’ choice.

I think this is a good practice considering the girl’s future security. Love marriages do take place though they are not always successful. Of course, this could happen in arranged marriages as well. In arranged marriages, the estranged couples are in a position of seeking advice or help from their respective families and that in turn might save a marriage from falling apart.

People, especially women don’t like to accept that they are in any way inferior to the male of the species. However, the fact remains that women are weaker in the physical aspects. They are easily subdued. That might be true.
I feel if a woman is self-confident, courage too develops. And if a woman is smart enough she won’t let a situation arise wherein she is put to test physically.


In my case, my parents were keen that I finish my Master’s degree before they give thought to my marriage. I was quite fortunate to have such considerate parents.

My Post graduation-

So there I was, absolutely thrilled to have joined the post graduate classes. I remember I was extremely nervous to walk into the class room. I went to the Head of the Department of English and confessed to him quite naively, I guess,

“ Sir, I don’t know anyone in my class”

The professor gave me a serious look and said,

“Well, you should make friends.”
